The Department of Paediatric Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, set a global record with a successful bilateral laparoscopic pyeloplasty surgery on a newborn. The three-month-old was born with a congenital abnormality that obstructed his urinary system and affected the passage of urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

The laparoscopic pyeloplasty operation is performed to treat ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), a congenital disease that obstructs the urinary system and inhibits urine flow from the kidney to the bladder. Traditionally, these procedures were conducted in sequence, with separate surgeries required for each damaged kidney.

The surgical team led by Dr Vishesh Jain chose to operate on both kidneys through laparoscopy to minimise invasiveness and maximise advantages under the direction and guidance of Prof. Dr M. Bajpai, the Department of Paediatric Surgery, and the Dean.

The effective execution of this sophisticated treatment on such a young infant necessitated cautious anaesthetic considerations. Dr Jain emphasised the significance of this accomplishment by stating that the successful bilateral laparoscopic pyeloplasty procedure on a three-month-old child demonstrated the advancements in paediatric surgery.

Dr Bajpai noted that this accomplishment reflected the teams passion and ability, as well as AIIMS commitment to providing cutting-edge care to patients of all ages. He also stated that, along with the post-operative prognosis, the laparoscopic method removed the need for any future procedures.

The successful bilateral laparoscopic pyeloplasty performed by AIIMS on the worlds youngest patient marks a significant milestone in the surgical care of newborns.
